We were in a status meeting yesterday here at the plant and the topic of Twitter came up, specifically whether our hosts on Rowdy should start offering up regular tweets as the characters they play in our podcasts and videos. One of our hosts let it slip that "I hate all this social media s**t! and all the time it takes! Just another thing I have to remember to do!"
While I think the short answer to the strategic question is "YES!" for all the reasons we talk about in our industry, we decided it was not quite that simple. Our illustrious host's cynicism is probably healthy. If he's in the business and HE thinks it's a time-suck, my guess is that there is a ton of regular consumers out there who couldn't agree more. They are surely inundated with all these new and exciting tools to help them spread the beauty that is their life all around the social net-o-sphere, no doubt for the certain benefit of everyone, right? Never mind that they have jobs, families, houses to take care of, meals to prepare, pets to walk, etc. and might not have the kind of time just lying around that all these tools demand of them.
So what's the insight? I think it's really simple: keep in mind that your consumers are busy. Set your social media expectations accordingly and above all make sure that what you are asking them to consume or share is honest, transparent, and adds value to their lives.
Agree? Disagree?

Let me guess...Buck. I sympathize but as Cutler has noted, if he will take the time to get his head around it, he just might find that he is getting better and more relevant feedback. He will also get more "so what" but the good has far outweighed the bad for me.
