What's Your 5-Year Expertise Plan

As a social network manager, I am pretty plugged into the social media community--at least I like to think so. I have met some amazingly smart folks out there online, including two really terrific new friends from Arment-Dietrich, a growing and innovative PR firm on Chicago. The founder/CEO's name is Gini Dietrich and the President is Diane Blazek. I met them both on Twitter and Gini shares my avid love of cycling, so we got to yacking about that pretty fast.

I was recently talking to Diane about social media and its impact on the PR industry and it hit me like a ton of bricks: how do all the so-called social media "experts" get to BE experts, and how do they maintain that expertise over time? I mean, I have been in the user experience design industry for 20 years, but I can honestly say that no specific expertise lasts more than a couple of years in this business, except maybe Photoshop and codeslinging. Social media tools are new, although their genesis might be a decade old. They will be on to something new by the time we all master Twitter.

So here's my point: how do you stay on top of your game? What is your five-year "expertise plan?"

Great topic. Unlike you, I am only a couple years into my career (onpitrow.com). And I learn mostly by stumbling upon things. I know I need a plan. But I'm struggling to find the right strategy. I am interested to see what others have to say.
